Drawing is the most accessible of all art disciplines, it’s where most of our creative journey’s begin as a pencil and piece of paper are readily available. I have come to love the freedom of expression associated with drawing. Live drawing, drawing directly from a moving subject has become my passion. As things move, they interact, overlap, walk out of sight. An energy is there to be captured, that is my challenge, to draw the essence and the feeling of what I see.

The Build Drawings
Throughout the build of my hempcrete home/studio I kept up my practice by making a drawn record of each stage of process. My favourite pieces are the ones showing the men casting the foundations. The builders’ acrobatic postures, as they stretched and balanced whilst tamping the wet cement, have so much energy and reflect the joy I felt as the first stage of building began.

Horse Racing
A £5 winning bet on I Am Maximus at the 2026 Grand National, sparked an enthusiasm for drawing at horse races, specifically the combined shapes of jockey and horse mid race. My closest racecourse is Catterick and it is there that I made my first on site drawings of race horses, flat racing horses are smaller than you imagine they are going to be, so are the jockeys!
Trying to draw a flat race is impossibly fast, I get a few marks , then the horses are passed you, drawing in the parade paddock pre race gives more time to study horse and jockey as they circle around before heading to the track. As at the livestock auction marts, I am particularly interested in the circuitous movements and theatricality of an enclosed arena.
During National Race Horse week, in August I visited my local stud ‘Michael Dodds racing’ it was there that an owner suggested I visit the following days thoroughbred horse sale at Goffs in Doncaster. Goffs were so welcoming and interested that an artist was making drawings directly from life, a short interview with me published on their Instagram has been viewed over 8000 times.https://www.instagram.com/p/DcoC0DwNHSr/
